Science is all around us. It can be used to explain phenomena ranging from simple everyday processes in our homes, to world news.
At Imberhorne School we believe that students deserve a broad and ambitious Science curriculum, underpinned by deep subject knowledge and a wide variety of scientific skills. Along their curriculum journey, students will marvel at the awe and wonder of the natural world, be inspired about STEM-based careers, and develop their scientific literacy skills in order to question and critically evaluate the world around them. Once students complete their science GCSEs, they will be well equipped with the transferrable skills developed within science to be able to progress into a wide range of further study, with our A-level courses in Biology, Chemistry and Physics, and BTEC Applied Science being popular sixth form choices. These versatile skills such as writing, communication and analysis will serve to support the understanding and development of a wide range of subjects outside of science as well and will prove beneficial into students’ careers and beyond.
We have designed our science curriculum to spiral, so that fundamental ideas are taught in Key Stage 3 before these key concepts are then built upon as students approach KS4 and move towards their GCSEs and into the Sixth Form. Working Scientifically skills are interwoven through the spiral curriculum from week 1 of Year 7 to ensure practical and analytical skills are developed, revisited and increase in complexity as students’ depth of understanding continues to develop.
We aspire for all students to leave Imberhorne with
- A deep understanding of the nature, processes, uses and implications of science in today’s world
- Highly developed transferrable skills: ranging from having the dexterity to carry out practical tasks accurately and safely, to having an analytical and questioning mind to challenge received wisdom
- The literacy skills required to read, understand, interpret and articulate technical terminology.
- A passion, appreciation and understanding of the natural world around them.
